Oppo, looking for a small air compressor, preferable oil free only because I plan on using it infrequently . Just need it for filling up tires , getting stuck bolts, dusting things etc. Any size and brand recommendations ? Pic not mine obviously!

Just like coffee you buy the biggest one you can afford.

small and cheap would be the ubiquitous $100 pancake compressor everyone has (I have one). perfect for small jobs and infrequent use. but is loud.

some friends picked up a far better, larger, higher quality (quieter) one from harbor freight because they were having a end of year blowout sale on top of there (might as well be bed bath and beyond always on sale) 20% off. point being, theirs is better than mine for $50 less!!!

anyway. the $100 cheapy kit on amazon has cords and adaptors and such to get you started, and free shipping if you are a prime member, which can be pricey on a heavy item

Small compressors and stuck bolts don’t mix. If you need to run an air impact, you’re gonna need some CFMs .

If I were buying a compact it’d be this one.

Craigslist/facebook marketplace.

You can usually find an older 20 gallon compressor for $50-100, or something smaller for cheaper.

If you’re not going to use it often, why spend a lot of money?

What’s the budget? I have a 20 gallon, 175psi 120v oil free  Husky (Home Depot) that’s able to run an impact wrench pretty well but I don’t think would do so well with a sander. It’s a pretty solid little thing and didn’t require me to try to run a 220v electrical line to my garage.

I’ve had this one for a few years, and quite like it:

https://www.harborfreight.com/21-gal-25-hp-125-psi-cast-iron-vertical-air-compressor-61454.html

It is frequently on sale for $150. My only complaint is if the tank is empty and you need to just top off a tire, you need to wait a bit to build up pressure. However, that larger capacity is nice when running a sprayer or similar.

This one looks to be a nice smaller/cheaper alternative, with the bonus of having slightly higher air flow rates to mine (which would be helpful running an impact gun):

https://www.harborfreight.com/10-gal-25-hp-125-psi-oil-lube-air-compressor-69092.html

Both of these are oiled, but that allows them to run quieter and last longer than the oil-less versions. The ver tical tanks means a smaller footprint in a tight garage, though either should be easy to move around if needed.

That’s about what the one I got runs. Not a bad option, really.  https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-20-Gal-175-PSI-Portable-Electric-Air-Compressor-C201H/206189626

Im sort of in the same boat as you, but I just purchased a Kobalt 20gal air compressor that goes to 175 psi. Using it for brad nailing on my parents old house, but once that’s done it will be in my garage for cleaning, nailing, impact gun use, and I always wanted an air hammer/chisel . Also filling tires, I bought the inflator with the trigger and gauge on it :)

Ignore the low noise description, this thing is loud AF.

I've got a small Porter Cable pancake compressor. It works well, but do yourself a favor and buy a bigger one. You won't regret it.
